NOW IS BETTER

25. November 2016 / Orpheum Graz

Mission Statement

Mission (DE)

Wir sollten viel lieber jetzt
als zu irgendeinem anderen Zeitpunkt
in der Geschichte leben wollen.
Dies ist das erste Mal,
dass ein großer Teil der Weltbevölkerung
für sein eigenes Schicksal
verantwortlich sein kann.
Probier neue Dinge,
überrasche jemanden,
rette die Welt,
scheitere,
sei erfolgreich,
triff einen Panda (oder ein Einhorn),
gewinne in der Lotterie,
tu alles, wovon du
schon immer geträumt hast.
Tu es jetzt.

inspiriert von Stefan Sagmeister

Mission (EN)

We’d much rather
live now than at any other time
in history.
This is the first time
that large parts of the
world population can be
in charge of their own destiny.
Try new things,
surprise someone,
save the world,
fail,
succeed,
meet a panda (or an unicorn),
win the lottery,
do everything you’ve
ever wanted.
Do it now.

We proudly present: The Speakers

Benedikt Ahlfeld
TALK (EN): The power of decision-making
Every day we make 20.000 decisions. Most of them with lightning speed; brain research proves that. The least of them, on the other hand, are rational and well thought through; the behavioral economy shows that. Benedikt Ahlfeld reveals which three decision traps you should certainly avoid and how you can utilize the findings of brain research.

TALK (EN): Medicine for health maintenance - The new definition of health
Health span describes the part of the life span during which humans remain healthy. With the rapid increase in the average age of our population, this topic is becoming increasingly relevant. How does science respond to this? Are there already solutions out there that can help us stay younger and healthier for longer?  Can we still rely on the old school pharma to tackle these challenges? …and how can we describe the new definition of health?  The future wellbeing of humans depends on the answers to these crucial question. Modern science is answering these questions today.

TALK (EN): Ourhub – the playing city
Public spaces play a vital role in the social and economic life of cities. They can provide opportunities for social interaction and can facilitate the development of strong communities. Successful public places have measurable socio-economic benefits. Parks, for example, can contribute to a city land values and the design of public spaces can significantly contribute to cities economic life. Long story short: there is no great cities without great public spaces. And no great public spaces without people: People using the space, adopting and caring for it.

Niki Ernst
TALK (EN): The lost in translation dilemma
The era of buzzwords has a terrible sister: interpretation. There is one way out: understand what creates a buzzword rather than interpret it. Niki is commuting between Vienna and San Francisco on a monthly basis. Its a hell of a commute that puts a bright light on the differences between the two worlds. Whats it all around the world of innovation, disruption, exponential growth, digital transformation and the fuzz around failure that we are so excited about?

Claudia Körbler
TALK (EN): The United Nations of I
As a Third Culture Adult (ATCK), Claudia has lived in many different countries over the last 13 years and my expat life has evolved in different shapes, sizes and forms and has led me to live the life in pursuit of my passion. With more than 800 million people under-nourished and towards a united fight against hunger and inequality my work in international development has shaped and equipped me to fight the fight on hands. However wanting to make the world a “better place” starts with humility and nothing less with an understanding how you can be the driving force of change.

Christian Holter
TALK (EN): Green our major energy demand now!
Hardly anyone recognizes that 50% of our energy consumption ends up for heating and cooling, and has major responsibility for CO2 Emissions and climate change. We feel the importance of heating only when there is a breakdown and we suddenly experience a cold shower or freeze at home. Today, the old infrastructure for heat supply is in serious troubles. Waste heat from power plants is not available any more. Fossil fuels shall phase out quickly. Renewable energy is challenged to fill this gap and move from successful pilot projects to the backbone of future supply. Many renewable sources are either limited by amount, by availability at the right time or by quality (e.g. temperature). There is the knowledge and the technology to move. Still in early stage but feasible, starting step by step now.

Gerald Knaus
TALK (EN): "How human rights die - why the human rights movement needs to be reinvented"
Today the human rights movement and its supporters are on the defensive across Europe and the US. Illiberal and autocratic leaders appear full of confidence, boasting of a popular mandate to rewrite the rules for the future of European politics, and to redefine what is shameful and what is honourable. Looking at three fundamental human rights issues - refugee rights, torture and political prisoners - and at developments in Europe in recent years Gerald will examine dramatic setbacks, the failure of many current strategies to protect rights and policy options for activists to mobilise democratic majorities in their defense ... and make an impact.

Michaela Ernst
TALK (DE): Industrie 4.0: Guten Morgen, Arbeit!
